The Art of Graphic Props in Games

Ann Li Khaw

I’m Ann, Noble Steed Game’s game artist and marketing person! In my spare time, I love making comics, zines, as well as running community events for comic artists in Malaysia. In the past, I did the UI design/art for Word Worm, Papillon Park and KoalAR. Fun fact about me: I really like birdwatching and one of my favourite birding locations is Jawbone Reserve! You should ask me about the dodgiest place I’ve gone for birding in Melbourne.

Letters, ads, posters, tickets, receipts and their graphics can tell you the time and place a movie is set in. Graphic props, as they’re called in filmmaking, can also be a key tool for immersing players in games! In this talk, I highlight what graphic props are, why they’re important and powerful, as well as share some examples in games. This will include how we’re making the ones in The Birdwatcher’s Journal, a birdwatching puzzle game full of paper-based clues for players to pick up.
